“You’re fired !” – this is what you may be soon hearing from your boss in the near future.
No, not that you doze off at work more often or haven’t met a single target as of yet. Not even because you goofed it up with a certain client last month. Your termination may come, with all chances possible, because of ROBOTS.
Yes, you heard it right. Robots are gradually taking up all your chores. Automation and Artificial Intelligence are creeping in like slow poison into every job sector. Somehow what the movies Wall-E and 9 had once projected, most scarily seems to be getting real. We may soon witness a robot-age overpowering mankind.
So what if you are educated?
Robots will chew up your job anyway. No matter how many degrees you hold or what grand designation you stand at or how well you are being paid, you should still fear your fate. Robots won’t ask even for a penny as salary or extra facilities. They will work and only work, most of the times much better than human beings. And within lesser time periods.
And which great guy said a break or two at workplace helps in better focusing? No, this productivity crap isn’t required. Not for Robots, at least. And that’s really something for you to be afraid of.
Ah! That volatile memory of yours!
Your boss hates it. He hates how you forget things in spite of the long to-do list stuck up your billboard. He hates how you have to be explained day-in and day-out your bit of trivial work. Most of all, he hates your skills that never seem to get polished even with years and years of experience. This is certainly not to offend you, but robots are a big advantage here. A data once fed, an instruction once given will never leave the machine. Until, of course, it’s dismantled.
To err is human, but, to never err is definitely robots.
Any profession still left for humans?
Sadly, not many. Robots are everywhere – as medical practitioners, scientists, lawyers, teachers, writers, singers – the list is long. With robots like Rethink Robotics’ Baxter already out in the market, the options are even more shrinking. And there won’t be any scope even in machine-making now, because a time will surely come when machines will create more machines. Reminds me of B.R.A.I.N – the thinking robot from the movie 9.
But, yes, on an emotional and high-level cognitive front, you may still outsmart machines. Remember, it is us, humans, who gave birth to robots. If you can be the creator, you can be the ruler too. After all, you are the owner of God’s greatest gifts – the hormones, the neurons and the pumping heart.
The man-machine war is on. So, let’s stay degree-freaks and finger-crossed for that matter. At least until Apocalypse.
